Signs you need drain cleaning
- Several drains in the house are slow at the same time.
- You hear gurgling from a drain after the water goes down.
- A bad smell keeps coming up from a sink or shower drain.
- Water backs up into the tub or shower when another fixture runs.
- A plunger clears the clog, but it keeps coming back.
What to expect
A plumber usually starts by asking which drains are slow and when it started. That helps show whether the clog is in one fixture or further down the line. Many clogs can be cleared with a drain snake, also called an auger. Tough build-up, like grease or roots, is sometimes cleared with hydro jetting, which uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of the pipe. If clogs keep coming back, a camera inspection can show what is inside the line, such as a break or roots. When the work is done, the plumber will usually run water to check that the drain flows freely.

Dan is the best! I've used him several times for different problems - from needing my water main repaired, then replaced to my hot water heater leaking, to the latest, fixing an amateur attempt at outdoor plumbing. Dan showed up on a Saturday night because we'd been without water in the house for a couple days, and had the problem fixed within an hour - and that included a trip to get the necessary parts!

Common questions
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?
They can do more harm than good. Harsh chemicals can damage some older pipes and seals, and they often don't clear the whole clog. If a plunger doesn't work, it's usually better to call a plumber.
Why do my drains keep clogging?
Repeat clogs often come from grease, hair, soap or food building up inside the pipe. They can also point to a problem further down the drain line.
